Swim Lesson Level Descriptions
All Classes are taught in accordance to American Red Cross standards,
and conducted by Red Cross certified and trained Instructors and Aides.
Starfish (Parent-Tiny Tot) - Ages: 1 year and older
Parent or guardian must attend each class with child. Emphasis is on water adjustment, floating, swimming, blowing bubbles, going underwater, holding breath, kicking, arm movement and fun & enjoyment in the water. Only one child per adult allowed.
Polliwog (Splasher)- Ages: 3 to 4 years old
Polliwogs is a swim readiness class for young children that helps begin the skills of face in the water, blowing bubbles, breath holding, kicking, floating, arm strokes and going underwater. Emphasis is on water adjustment, water safety knowledge and practices, fun and enjoyment in the water. Most children will have to take this class more than once.
Tadpole (Advanced Splasher) - Ages: 3 to 4 years old
Tadpoles are for children who have successfully completed the Splasher course or are able to float, stroke, and kick 5-10 feet. Emphasis is placed on swimming farther and developing endurance.
Minnows (New Beginner) – Ages: 5 to 14 years old
Minnows are for participants who are taking swim lessons for the first time. Emphasis is on water adjustment, swimming readiness skills, basic safety, floating, kicking, and arm strokes.
Goldfish (Beginner) – Ages: 5 to 14 years old
Goldfish is for participants who are able to float comfortably on their front and back. Emphasis is on introducing the front and back crawl. Most children will have to take this class more than once.
Manta rays (Advanced Beginner)– Ages: 5 to 14 years old
Manta rays are for participants who have successfully completed the Beginner class or are able to swim 15 yards without assistance. Emphasis is on improving the front and back crawl and introducing rhythmic breathing.
Stingrays-Ages: 5-14 years old
Stingrays is for participants who have successfully completed the Advanced Beginner class or are able to swim 20 yards of the front crawl and 15 yards of back crawl. Emphasis is on perfecting the front and back crawl and introducing rotary breathing and elementary backstroke.
Dolphin (Intermediate) – Ages: 5 to 14 years old
Dolphin is for participants who have successfully completed the New Level course or is able to swim 25 yards of front and back crawl without assistance. Emphasis is on mastering the front and back crawl and elementary backstroke and introducing the breaststroke and sidestroke.
Barracuda (Swimmer) – Ages: 5 to 14 years old
Barracuda is for participants who have successfully completed the Intermediate course or can swim 25 yards of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke with out stopping. Emphasis is on introduction of butterfly, turns and surface dives and all previous strokes.
Adult – Ages: 14 and up
This level is for anyone over 14 who want to learn basic swimming skills. No matter what the age there is always a time to learn to swim. This class is not taught in the deep pool but in an area that is comfortable for both student and teacher. You will learn the basics to swimming including floating on front and back and arm strokes.
